All in a day's work

Wheee... bored bored bored.
It's been a long time since I wrote on this journal, I have been so busy these past month because of this and that, but mostly because of my job.
Early in July, the stock market was rising to an all time high, lay men and fund managers alike all felt that the stock market would reach as high as 4000 by the end of the year. People were investing here and there, and hence the workload.
Then tragedy struck, well not so much a tragedy but a bump in the ever volatile stock market. The US subprime mortgage issue finally became a big issue and markets all over the world found themselves falling to an all time low. As it was, people were scrambling to get out of the markets.
What followed was a number of sleepless nights for the fund managers, agents, and investors alike. Sunlife had emergency discussions to brief the agents on the situation and people were calling and asking for advice. On our part we had to brief clients regarding the situation, and carry out their orders for them. At the same time agents still had to be agents and sell.
While the world of investments was in chaos, it was contest month for the Sunlife life insurance and pre need agents. I had to go with my mom to meet with lots of clients, process their applications, and do all the stuff assisstants do =)
A lot of things has happened during this period and I had my share of hardships and stupidities. Hopefully that is all over and done with. At the end of the day, I suppose I'm glad to be bored again =p

Mutual Funds and Me

What have I been up to these days?
These days I'm an assistant to a financial planner for Sunlife and at the same time I'm also waiting for my license to be a full pledged mutual fund representative.
As an mf rep I'll be responsible for spreading the word about mutual funds which is a really cool investment vehicle...ehem.
Anyway, in mutual funds, investors' money are pooled together, and through an investment company the pooled money is invested into various securities such as equities or stocks, government and corporate debt securities, and short term debt securities.
As an investment vehicle, it boasts of potentially higher returns (especially over banks), liquidity (which means to say that the company is ready to buy back its shares at any time), professional management (which means that you don't even have to lift a finger to invest), diversification (investment are spread out, therefore less risks),transparency (you have share
holder rights) and at the same time it also helps boost the Philippine economy.
I repeat...
1.potentially higher returns
2.liquidity
3.professional management
4.diversification
5.transparency
6.boost Philippine economy
More on mutual funds on the next installment =) hehe

Blogging and Job hunting =)
Feb. 19th, 2007 | 10:44 pm
mood:
blah
Keeping a blog and writing in it has never really been something that I am keen on doing.
Why? because I'm not really fond of writing. Don't get me wrong, I like words, in fact,
I love them. I guess I'm just too lazy to write... Recently, however, I found out just
how useful and how important it is.
Looking for a job, especially for a fresh grad who has no wish to be stuck in
mountains of paper work, is actually very hard. People simply put are expecting too much
from you. Once upon a time, just having a bachelor's degree from a reputable university
is enough, now you have to compete in extra curricular activities as well.
Employers nowadays are all looking for people with experience, which is why the
biggest question in the minds of those students who were far too studious in their
university life to actually go and join extra curricular activities is this..."Where the
*expletive* am I going to get experience if they won't *expletive* give me one!!!"
Of course we cannot blame the employers for looking for the best employees for their
company, but really..."Where the *expletive* am I going to get experience if they won't
*expletive* give me one!!! In any case, because I understand the situation of the
employers I also realize that it is up to me to find new ways to make myself more appealing to them. And blogging, I realized, is one of the best ways to do it.
Blogging can not only give your employers an idea of who you are, it can also
give them an idea of your ability. Of course this can only happen if you refrain from
putting one liners and endless rants on your blog. What sane employer would, after all,
hire an employee whose life only consist of complaints...
On the other hand writing your thoughts and feelings in an orderly and organized
manner gives you certain benefits. First, you get to practice correct grammar, then you can
actually find yourself reflecting on the situations you get into in your everyday
life, and finally you get to show the people who will visit your blog who you really are.
After all there is more to writing than just saying what you want to say, people also get to know you by the way you write.
Indeed, blogging, I think, can help you a lot in job hunting. That in that way you can make yourself more appealing to an employer. You give them an idea of who you are, what can you do, how do you handle situations...in the most efficient manner possible. =)
Hence, you'll probably find me writing more often in this blog from here on. =)
